Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Saint-Etienne - short overview

The Ecole nationale supérieure des Mines of Saint-Etienne is one of the French "Grandes Ecoles" dedicated to training highly qualified engineers and to carrying out research to meet the needs of industry. Its mission is to support the development of its students and of companies through a range of courses and fields of research, from the initial training of generalist engineers "ingénieurs civils des mines", to PhD teaching ; from material sciences to micro-electronics via process engineering, the environment, civil engineering, computer science and health engineering. The school's expertise is based on teaching that is both academic and directly related to the real world of the companies, and is supported by innovative pedagogy.

ARMINES and the 6 Écoles des Mines are bound by convention and pool their means within Research Centres in charge of education and research in the fields of Engineering sciences.

Its mission is mainly built around "partner" research with mixed objectives:

  • Produce, implement and apply scientific and technological knowledge related with industrial, economic and societal issues laid out by third parties;
  • Use the ‘scientific material’ generated to enrich the academic mission of the Centres and Schools (teaching, education through research, publications, international reach, appreciation, etc.).

La Rotonde is a science centre located in the Ecole des Mines of Saint-Etienne developing a policy of scientific culture and of scientific awareness, in close relationship with educational authorities. La Rotonde proposes workshops to teachers and pupils and helps them in their scientific projects.

Many productions (theatre plays, books, comics...), exhibitions, pedagogical and cultural tools are also proposed to primary schools.

La Rotonde participates in the teacher’s initial and in-service training, and in the training of future teachers, in addition to the IUFM (Teachers Training Centres in France). Scientists, students and PhD students of the Ecole des Mines are associated to their actions which are directed to the benefit of schools.

Activities with the Fibonacci project

The Fibonacci project is locally coordinated by the Ecole des Mines through it's science center La Rotonde and the educational authorities.

The main objective of the project is to enhance and maintain an effective local network of science education actors in order to develop hands-on activities in primary schools.

200 classes are involved in the project in Saint-Etienne and its neighbourhood. The teachers of these classes are provided with:

  • Training sessions
  • Learning units and material boxes
  • Pedagogical and scientific support
